Paradox Conversion Roadmap

Fastest Path to Production

A smaller cleaner application is easier to convert. A completely clean application is an application where the data and code are clean. Meaning, no extra tables, no fields not in use, no code blocks not in use, well organized and commented code blocks, and a defined consistent architecture used throughout the application. A completely clean application is rare and more expensive to build, but is easier to maintain. Most existing business database applications have extra tables not in use, extra fields within production tables not in use, and spaghetti code (blocks of code no longer used but left in the code), as well as multiple coding techniques employed. This is especially true for Desktop Database applications such as Paradox, dBASE, and MS Access.

The Prestwood IT 2-Step

We've grouped together the traditional project phases into our 2-step process. Ask us about our 2-Step Details flyer.

Step 1: Discovery

  • PSDP Feasibility Phase: Setup legacy system for coders. Document legacy system using automated tools.
  • PSDP Requirements Phase: Identify forms and reports to convert. Document terms, and actors. Identiry use cases. Identify enhancements (if any), and tables in use.
  • PSDP Design Phase: Build new database. Initial screen design mockup. Document business rules and additional documentation of use cases.

Step 2: Build-It

  • PSDP Initial Coding Phase: Build MVC shell with user management and login. Build data migration program. Build initial forms. Alpha builds. Add mobile readiness.
  • PSDP Testing & Rework Phase: Beta builds.
  • PSDP User Acceptance Phase: When a build passes beta testing, we move to user acceptance testing with optional double entry alongside existing application.
  • PSDP Deployment Phase: Plan rollback strategy and deploy.
  • PSDP Operations and Maintenance Phases: Establish maintenance plan

Monthly Budgeting

One approach we've used to get started as quickly as possible is to establish a monthly budget. For small to medium size applications, we usually establish a budget of 3 to 5 thousand a month with the goal of completing the conversion within 6 to 12 months. This approach allows you to control your monthly budget. You can increase or decrease the monthly budget as your budget allows -- speeding up or slowing down the conversion. Each month we complete a mini-development cycle with the allocated hours. The first few months are used to establish an overall project budget.
