Questions, questions
Which takes precedence - the section in the project file where it gives a list of forms to be automatically created at startup or my choice of form creation via the project option selection bit? Think! , , The majority of examples in the online help use "Free" in some context when closing forms, yet hidden away in the depths of the very same online help it also says to use "Release" in preference to "Free" when closing forms as it allows for all actions to finsh before closing. I doubt if I will ever find that particular bit again, but does some clever type know the reasoning\answer? Think!

QReport Query SQL
Now I will readily admit that I aren't the brightest candle in the shop window when it comes to SQL, so I need help (Im looking at you Mr Wehrly!)., , My report splits into four groups, each group containing a list of items for that group and their current value. I list my data using QRDBEdits and it works fine. However, I would like to exclude any items where the figure is "0.00". I figure to do this I need a QRExpr instead of the QRDBEdit but I dont know how to make it work properly with the SQL code. In delphi, I would write something like this., , if Currency((Query2.Debit - Query2.Credit)) <> 0 then , , but how to do it in Sql???, , Answer this for me and Ill get around to sending Mike my picture for the avatars. Im growing my beard as we speak!

I cast a vote, too. The bug(s) are very well documented in this QC report, and good fixes have been suggested.  This is difinitely an area that needs attention.

waiting for video to complete
In my program, when the form first loads, I have a procedure that plays a video file. I want to wait until the file is done playing, then bring up another form. Currently my onActivate procedure looks like this:, , begin, mediaplayer1.play;, ********************************, form1.visible := False;, form2.visible := True;, end;, , The line of (*) is where I think I need to put some kind of a wait command. I have explored the delphi help topics on "mediaplayer.wait", and the "waitfor" command with no luck. , , Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Findfirst File extensions oddity?
Can anybody please explain why Findfirst, when searching for *.htm will also find .html etc. and what please is the workaround. Was this designed for dos only when there were only three letters?, The real problem is that many web sites include duplicate files one for each of the extensions. Passing the output of Findfirst to a Stringlist with duplicates trapped will not of course solve the problem., Hopefully thanks., Don Roll Eyes

Streaming compression
Hi all (again), , I've been needing to compress large chunks of data (currently stored as a 3D array of mostly integers) before saving them out to disk., , I've experimented with Streams and a neat function(s) I found on the net using the zlib compression tool to (de)compress the stream., , This all works fine - but only on small streams!! Once the stream gets bigger than about 5MB I get errors (out of memory?) even though my mem manager says plenty of mem left! , , Therefore - anybody know how to compress large amounts of data on the fly (streaming) or know anything about memory limits on streams? I've heard of 10MB+ strings...could that be an option (instead of streams?)., , ANy help greatly appreciated

I was wondering how i can make my program respond to something passed on the command like, ie: "MyProgram.exe c:\files\File.mpg" I was told elsewhere that, ParamStr is what i would have to use, but i dont understand quite how to use it, and anywhere else i asked for help, they ignored me Big Grin! , , Confused Confused Confused

Try the following to prove the command line is OK., , procedure TForm1.FormShow(Sender: TObject);, begin , if (ParamCount > 0) and FileExists(ParamStr(1)) then , ShowMessage(ParamStr(1));, end; , , This should display the 1st commmand line agruement in a OK dialog box, thats all. If this works then the problem is with the WinMedia1 object opening the file or the file doesn't exists.

String Lists
Hi guys... I have this question. I'm doing this parser class using stringlists and if i add a string that is in a stringlist to another stringlist and then call Clear on the first stringlist, will the strings in the second stringlist also be deleted, since they are all pointers realy? If enyone has an idea how this works, please give me a hint.

A simple way of breaking-out of a long loop would be to have a pause button which sets a boolean pause variable, and include a test for that pause variable in the while loop (given one of the instructions which enables things to work while the loop is in progress).

Code to launch applications?
I have searched all through the help files included with Delphi with no luck! I am using Delphi 4 and 5, and what I need to do is pretty simple: I want a button to launch notepad with a specific file. , , Can someone either give me a sample of code that does this, or at least point me to a resource that will explain how to do it. Like I said, I searched through all the Delphi help files with no luck, but maybe I was using the wrong terminology.

is this possible?
Is there a way to open a document without specifying an application to use? , , Or a way to indicate that the "default viewer" be used for the given file type? , , I guess I am trying to find a way around using the "find" function to search the user's hard drive for a particular application. I am trying to open a PDF document, and I am finding that different versions of Adobe Acrobat have different names for their exe files (some are 'acrobat.exe' and some are acrobat5.exe, etc). That is why I want to be able to say "Open this pdf with the default PDF viewer"., , Any ideas?

HELP! with file IO problem
Hello , im a realitive newbie with delphi and, am in need of some help with this.., , i wish to open an untyped file in delphi 6 , it has an *.dat extension and contains some text strings and other data inside ,, i need to be able to search thru this file for a given string , and retreive data as strings from anywhere in the file .., , I am using the blockread function and so far have managed to do this with a standard textfile, but not with the Dat file i need to read , my method was to blockread into a array of char, and to search the array for the text .. this works ok but the array is mostly blank when read from the *.dat file.., i can do this very easily in VB but not in delphi, and im stuck! .. if someone cant point me in the right direction it would help me a lot.., , any method that works suits me althou i would like to learn to use filestreams and memorystreams also.., thanks., Mark

The recursive call to GetSubDirList doesn't trigger the Windows Event Handler until it returns from the last call. So "Application.ProcessMessages" triggers the event handler to repaint the lines in the list box as they are being written.
