API Documentation Survey Results
by Peter Gruenbaum

In a perfect world, API documentation would contain clear, complete instructions on everything that developers need to know to use your platform. In reality, organizations have limited time and budget to create API documentation, and so organizations need to prioritize to create documentation that is most useful to the people who will use it.

SDK Bridge set out to find out what is most important to the people who use APIs by sending out a survey and asking them. We found, not surprisingly, that many thought that documentation could be better. When asked to rate quantitatively, people rated overviews, sample code, and API references the highest, followed closely by tutorials. When asked for open-ended comments, a large percentage mentioned working sample code as helpful, and an equally high percentage mentioned how important it is that documentation be complete and accurate. Two other important factors that were mentioned by several respondants are (1) it is very helpful to explain why you would use something in addition to how you use it and (2) completeness and accuracy are critical.

Code Snippet of the Month

By Reference or Value (and by constant)
The default for parameters is by value. For by reference, add var in front of the parameter. ObjectPAL also offers constant parameters where you add const in front of the parameter. A constant parameter is like a read-only parameter the compiler can optimize. You cannot assign a value to a constant parameter.

method cmCode(s String) ;...s is by value.

method pushButton(var eventInfo Event)
  ;...eventInfo is by reference.

method cmCode(Const s String)
  ;...s is a constant read-only parameter.

proc cpNever() String
return "Never duplicate a line of code!"

Paradox Tables Topic:
Definition of the Month: Paradox Net Dir

The directory location of the Paradox network control file PDOXUSRS.NET. The active NET DIR parameter is stored in the Paradox section of the BDE configuration file and has precedence over any other NET DIR parameters that may be stored in older 16-bit configuration files, or in the System Init section of the current configuration file, or in the Registry. These other NET DIR entries will have no effect. To access a Paradox table on a network drive, the active NET DIR parameter in the Paradox section of the BDE configuration file must point to a network drive and folder in common to all users.

Installation, Setup, & BDE Topic:
Download of the Month: Windows Help program
Windows Vista and Server 2008 users need to install Windows Help to use Paradox's help.

Paradox 9 (and all versions of Paradox including Paradox 10 and 11) still ship with a Windows Help file so, if you're a Vista user, you will need to download Windows Help. Hopefully Corel will convert the Paradox help file to the new help system in a future version of Paradox and hook it into Paradox. This is a very easy task to do so it's just a matter of them wanting to do it.

Resource Link of the Month: Workaround to This System Does Not Support Full Screen Mode in Windows Vista

Want to run Paradox for DOS in full screen mode? Good summary of this issue with 3 work-arounds. It seems it's better just to get used to looking at Paradox for DOS in a Window. The default font size for DOS apps is pretty small and you get a small Window on most monitors because monitors these days have much higher resolution. Increasing it to 10x18 on my Vista notebook made for a nice Paradox for DOS experience.

Microsoft link addressing this issue...
Some 16-bit DOS-based Programs and the Command Prompt will not run in full-screen mode in Windows Vista

FAQ of the Month: Paradox and PNG Images

Does Paradox for Windows support .PNG image files?

Yes, Paradox 10 and 11 support .PNG graphics. For example, you can insert a .PNG using Edit | Paste From. However, Paradox 9 and earlier do not.

Note: All images stored in a Graphic field in Paradox tables are stored as uncompressed BMP images. This FAQ is about Paradox for Windows' ability to paste or import .PNG images into the .BMP formatted Graphic field type. For earlier versions of Paradox, you have to first convert the image.

Interactive Paradox: Forms Topic:
Tip of the Month
When users press CTRl-SPACEBAR to display a lookup table, remember to let them know that they can use CTRL-Q to locate a value. This is an interactive feature that can greatly enhance the user's perception of your application.
