A locking mechanism that allows other users to edit a record that is currently being edited. Essentially, last in wins or edits are discarded usually with an error. Optimistic locking mechanism that allows other users to edit a record that is currently being edited. Either first to commit edits wins and all other edits, if and when committed, are discarded usually with an error. Or, last to commit edits wins.

Contrast this with pessimistic locking which prevents other users from entering edit mode on a record that is currently locked.
